The 797th Design Gallery 1953 Exhibition
Tracing Design Gallery through DM, 1964–2026
The activities of the Japan Design Committee that expressed each era — and what lies ahead
This event has ended.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Matsuya Ginza, this exhibition presents a comprehensive display of historical direct mail (DM) materials from Design Gallery 1953.
Since its opening in 1964, the gallery has hosted nearly 800 exhibitions. The extensive collection of DMs announcing these exhibitions goes beyond their role as invitations, forming a powerful graphic archive that vividly captures the atmosphere of each era.
Through approximately 800 designs filling the gallery walls, visitors can look back on more than half a century of design history continuously communicated by Matsuya and the Japan Design Committee.
The exhibition also features design policies from current committee members, along with reflections on the history of the Design Gallery.
We invite you to experience the trajectory of these activities rooted in Ginza, as well as the outlook toward the future.

Message from Exhibition Coordinator Motomi Kawakami
It has been 73 years since the Japan Design Committee began its activities with a strong commitment to deepening understanding and awareness of design.
While continually renewing its membership, the committee has sustained its partnership with Matsuya through initiatives such as product selection for the “Design Collection,” as well as the planning and operation of exhibitions and Design Gallery 1953.
As the concluding chapter of the 100th anniversary of Matsuya Ginza, this exhibition traces a path toward the future through the direct mail materials of nearly 800 Design Gallery exhibitions.
Since its founding, the committee has upheld independence and a spirit of volunteerism, bringing together an unparalleled group of professionals from diverse design fields. We take pride in operating with a rich diversity of perspectives and a well-balanced approach.
Moving forward, we remain committed to conveying the excellence and enjoyment of design through a wide range of projects and initiatives.
Alongside the DMs, this exhibition also introduces words from current committee members.
We sincerely hope you will enjoy the exhibition.
