Experience the Comfort
Only a Department Store Can Offer Through Tailored Suits

"Matsuya Men's Club" is a service launched in 2017 to provide helpful information for business fashion and everyday life.

Previously offered as a closed membership program, it was reopened to the public on March 1, 2025. This time, we’re introducing one of the most popular services: Pattern-Order Suits.

Experts Who Understand True Comfort
Share Key Points to Consider

From affordable ready-to-wear options to the finest fully bespoke suits, there are many ways to acquire a suit. Ordering one involves communication with staff and tends to cost more, which can feel intimidating for first-timers.

Let's take a look at two Matsuya team members and their order experiences.

First Up: Mr. Oda, Representing Customers in Their 20s

Mr. Oda has some concerns about his body shape.

“My arms are long, and ready-made suits rarely fit right in the sleeves. I played sports in school, so my build is quite thick,” he says.

A fitting specialist adds, “It’s certainly a body type that’s hard to fit. You probably struggled to find ready-made suits that felt right. Your arms are long, and your shoulders are slightly sloped.”

A tailor measures a man's arm length in a suit shop, surrounded by shelves, fabric samples, and a brick wall.

The measuring process begins swiftly—chest, waist, and more. To ensure a clean shoulder and arm line, it’s key to match the shoulder line precisely.

After measurements, he tries on one of about 24 fitting samples that most closely match his frame. While checking the fit, another issue surfaces.

A person in a dark suit stands in a clothing store, holding a jacket with a price tag. Racks of suits and shirts are in the background.

He has a posture that leans slightly backward when standing, which creates excess fabric around the back. Also, due to his muscular build and prominent hips, the vent at the back flares out. Adjustments are noted accordingly, and the fitting ends.

A First-Time Suit: How Does It Feel?

About six weeks later, Mr. Oda tries on his completed suit. “I was nervous at first since it was a new experience, but the staff guided me through the measurements and fabric selection, so it was really smooth.”

“The comfort is nothing like ready-made. This must be what a ‘truly fitted’ suit feels like,” he says with a laugh. He chose slanted hip pockets for a youthful look, and a double hem for a classic touch.

With order-made suits, even the smallest details can be customized.

Next: Mr. Warabi, Representing Customers in Their 50s

Mr. Warabi wanted a new suit for his nephew’s wedding. He’s over 180cm tall and has a larger frame. He usually wears a jacket and shirt combination, and prefers navy or gray tones.

Two men in a tailor shop discuss fabric swatches on a table. One man stands with a measuring tape, while the other is seated, both in suits.

After measuring, he takes time to consult and select a fabric.

“For larger builds, more stress is placed on the garment, so we recommend durable British fabrics,” says the staff. A brand called "Alfred Brown"—used by British Olympic and national soccer teams—is a top pick.

Shelves with neatly folded fabric rolls in various shades of blue and gray, set against a brick wall, with a wooden hanger on the side.

Lightweight Italian fabrics are also suggested. Compared to British ones, they’re softer and known for their elegant sheen and drape. They’re also popular for their luxurious appearance.

A Fit That Goes Beyond Standard Sizes

Two images of a man in a room: left in casual attire with sneakers, right in a formal suit with dress shoes, standing on a wooden floor.

After choosing British fabric and completing the fitting, Mr. Warabi’s suit arrives in about six weeks.

Trying it on, he shares his thoughts: “Off-the-rack suits often leave me thinking, ‘I wish there was a size between these two.’ But having it properly measured makes a big difference. The fit around the back and arms is very natural. Even raising my arms feels smooth.”

He chose a basic single-breasted jacket with wide lapels for a rounded, softer impression."

A Fit Just for You, and the Joy of Wearing It

By tailoring suits to body shape, posture, and movement tendencies, customers get a unique, personal fit and achieve the look they truly want.
