A traditional craft from Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Washi paper is coated with fermented persimmon tannin, enhancing durability while offering natural insect-repellent properties. Considered a symbol of prosperity, it also makes an excellent gift.
Produced by Kurikawa Shoten, the only workshop carrying on the traditions of Japan's three major uchiwa-producing regions.
Designed by Awatsuji Design with inspiration from Kumamoto's Higo Rokka (Six Flowers of Higo), this elegant uchiwa is crafted for lasting enjoyment.
The cultivation of Higo Chrysanthemums was encouraged by Hosokawa Shigekata, the sixth lord of the Kumamoto Domain. Great importance is placed on the harmony of flower colors, arrangement, and height balance, a tradition that continues to this day.
